After many months of simulations and years refinement the effort to create an universal medium tank for use en-masse in planetary militias and poorer private armies, both of which can't usually afford anything more than second hand hardware decomissioned from house units. This often creates it's own set of problems as the machine parts are often at the end of their expected life cycle or even well beyond it. Malfunctions are getting common and spare parts are sometimes hard to come by as primary factories have long ago reoriented to produce something else. Many companies from Defiance through Taurian Territorial to Quickcell were aware of the niche on the market, but till well after 3058 they mostly lacked the capacity to fill it. With clan assault halted and general boom in markets new technical gadgets were rushed to production and most of the militia unit requirements were ignored with a few exceptions like the Watchman or Sentry battlemechs or Centipede Scout Cars. After the turmoil of FedCom Civil War it was obvious that planetary militias need to be purposefully equipped with dedicated units that can be supported by states military machinery and won't require a logistics genius to obtain parts for. Within following two years every major company unveiled it's own prototype to fill militia unit's needs, but just as they were unveiled the ideas were shortly thereafter borrowed by the other concurrents, sometimes through joint designing efforts, sometimes trough industrial espionage.
First to appear was the vehicle we now mostly label Type 50. DC debuted their Yari in late 3062 and was shortly followed by independently developed FWL Pugio and FS Protector TC and Liao jointly managed to make a near perfect copy of Combine Yari with a few refinements, while Stainer space allowed the sale of the same vehicle shortly thereafter without expressing any desire to oficially incorporate the design in the LAAF. In spite of furious legal battles industrial sabotage and espionage on all sides the companies somewhat reached a conclusion that the weight of 50 tons offers the best combination of equipment carried, armour and practicality, as the vehicle can be transported in greater numbers. The DC demanded their tank to use primitive technology in combination with latest technological expertise to create easy to upgrade chassis, to which in a stroke of genius Buldog Enterprises responded with relatively primitive omni-vehicle. The original used to have more advanced armour and lower pod capacity, but later as one state borrowed from another the designs somewhat stabilised on standard plating, mostly sloped and cut from large, flat pieces that can be removed whole to reduce production costs and speed up the repairs. Weapons are mostly packed in removeable turret but they also use standard issue omni containers eventhough it somewhat reduces the depression of the main gun due to relatively flat turret profile. Engine, transmission and dust filters are in a dissectionable block, as it's customary, but engine space dimensions would allow for inclusion of a larger engine without having to cut the chassis, although everything still has to be rewired.
Type 60 resulted from the original Liao research on application of the same expertise they have gained from copying Yari to their own Po tank. The resul is harder to transport, but more resilient. The design was quickly adopted by TDF and FWLM, who are also the ones who emoved about 10 % of armour to increase the pod capacity to match that of type 50 allowing both to share the same weapon packages.
Type 50i is a result of decades of use of both tanks and is intended as a replacement for both types and more. Although the armour is not nearly a match for type 60, but it's still 19,5 % better overall thanks to advanced composites and additional plating. Additional space for armour and equipment was freed by using a much more powerful fuel cell, that can push the tank over 85 km/h on a flat surface. Suspension and targeting were also updated over time, but general shape was mostly kept through the decades. Even weapons packages are mostly the same, although the increased pod space is intended to allow installation of improved EW and targeting equipment. Type 50i will doubtlessly find new buyers who can afford to invest a bit more, but still don't want to loose a fortune. _________________ The dragon NEVER sleeps!
