Description: |
In hope of salvaging the embattled worlds of the renegade St. Ives Compact, Chancellor Sun-Tzu Liao has launched a war that stretches far beyond the scope of military conquest. His mission: reunite St. Ives with his own Capellan Confederation. But after months of combat extend into years, the smash-and-destroy tactics have turned the crippled Compact into a bloody wasteland—and the Chancellor`s costly victory into a virtual deathwatch.
For the warriors of House Hiritsu, and for the Capellan and Compact soldiers on the `Mech-shredded front lines Sun-Tzu`s noble crusade has become a nightmare. And now, with his dream of glory slipping away, the Chancellor will make one last desperate gamble—a final solution to regain total control of a civil war exploding out of control. No matter what the cost. |

Strangely enough, this was one of the first BTech novels I read, years before I read Threads of Ambition, to which this is the sequel (nothing like starting in the middle). Unlike some BTech novels, this one stands on its own pretty well. The combat scenes are well done, and we hear about the civilian cost of war, something seldom mentioned in the BattleTech universe; that's one of the things I liked best about this and its predecessor, in fact. I also liked seeing the different motivations behind different warriors; the varying reasons why these people are fighting. Overall, one of the best BTech books. |

This book was really for the Capellan fan and those just interested in the BT universe. The civil war of the Capellan Confederation and the Saint Ives Compact continues. Sun-Tzu is nor longer the First Lord and Candace does not want to turn to the Star League for help. If the St. Ives can’t stand on it own, then it shall not stand.
You get to experience the blind hate some warriors have toward the other side. You also see the internal struggles of other warriors as they realize they are fighting their own countrymen (even if wayward).
How much will Sun-Tzu spend to win this war? How much will Candace spend to protect her realm?
Again, as in book one of the Capellan Solution, I felt this one too had a slow start. Also, I almost needed to maintain a list of officers, units and locations. I get lost with that many names. Still in the end, it was a good read.

This is my favorite Battletech novel. It has a great mix of personal tragedy, gritty military reality, large-scale politics, and great action scenes. I can't recommend this book or its prequel enough. |
