Overview:
The AS7-E modification to the standard AS7-D was designed by techs of the Seventh Crucis
Lancers, in 2797, during the height of the First Succession War. At the time, the Lancers
were on Kentares IV, having remained there when DCMS troops took the system. The
modifications were made to every Atlas in the unit early in the battle, in order to keep the
inevitable lack of munitions from affecting the unit's most powerful 'Mechs. After the death
of Coordinator Minoru Kurita, Prince John Davion ordered the Seventh to evacuate Kentares.
The Lancers complied, and were out of the system before Minoru's son Jinjiro arrived with
reinforcements.
Capabilities:
The AS7-E removes the Atlas' standard autocannon for a pair of PPCs, which inflict similar
damage at a longer range. The LRM launcher was downgraded so it would use less ammo, and the
SRMs were completely removed in favor of medium lasers. The Atlas' arm mounted medium lasers
were moved into the torsos to free the arms for physical combat. Extra heat sinks were added
to the chassis, giving the Atlas the ability to fire its main weapons (the PPCs) and move
with minimal heat build up.
Deployment:
The AS7-E Atlas has served the Federated Suns in situations where ammo is scarce for more
than three centuries. The most notable engagements involving AS7-Es took place during the
First Succession War, in the AFFS counter-attack which came after the Kentares Massacre.
There are at least five recorded incidents of AS7-Es simply exploding due to heat induced
reactor failure. In all of these cases, the final cause was determined to be enraged pilots
who pushed their 'Mechs beyond their capabilities.

Comment:
This assault has good long range firepower (where the original was lacking in) and short range firepower (though without the psychological AC/20-factor). Due to the PPCs and lots of lasers heat management is an issue here but there are lots of Succession War Mechs with worse problems. To fire two PPCs on the run without any heat is more than nice for it's time frame. All long range weapons plus running will get this Mech on the unpleasant 5 heat as will a full laser salvo, but you can correct this easily by dropping the head mounted laser for an additional heat sink. With this modification a full short or long range salvo plus running will bring you to the magic 4 heat. I would relocate two or even four of the lasers back into the arms: Otherwise it's fire arc would be too narrow especially when fighting at closer ranges.

PPCs are a good addition to Atlas' arsenal, allowing it to fight prolonged battles. Lasers somewhat make up for the loss of the AC, but I don't like the idea of removing lasers from the arms, there are not enough heat sinks to fire all of them anyway, so I don't think that limiting your firing arc was good idea. Not bad, but I have problems seeing the Atlas in these stats.

There's some odd design decisions here, and this 'mech comes out looking like a thousand other PPC/Medium Laser boats I've seen a million times.
The heat brackets don't really add up very well. I'd look at stripping some of the medium lasers for heat sinks, or I'd put some SRMs back on this mech for the extra punch and crit seeking they offer.
The long range bracket doesn't cycle nicely if you use salvo firing, the LRM can really only be used every other round if you want to avoid heat buildup. I suppose you could salvo one of the PPCs, but then you've got more heat sinks than you need, so neither solution is particularly efficient.
At short range, you've got more medium lasers than you can fire, and running up the heat at short range in a 'mech which is already easy to outmaneuver strikes me as being a bad idea, so the extra lasers really only act as contingent systems in case some of the lasers are knocked out.

While it does lead to the temptation of less ammunition reloading and combat longevity, the removal of the AC20 seems almost sacriligious. It's hard to beat the localized damage capacity by splitting your targeting thoughout various weapons systems and it also leads to more of a military aspect (due to lack of usable salvage). Most mercs who could afford one of these baby's probably don't really give a hoot about salvage anyways though, so all in all I leave it as an equal to it's oridginal design. No better. No worse.

Well, as an ammo efficent retrofit, this model works fairly well, with a few small problems.
The most glaring of which, is going to be heat. A few of the weapons share similar range profiles, specifically the LRMs and PPCs. This lets the mech play sniper, though it cant use the LRMs AND the PPCs in tandem for any length of time. The heat scale will begin to creep up, causing an already slow mech to slow down even more.
Also, the sheer numbers of medium lasers will pose a problem as well. I would not be surprised if someone were to have the mentality of 'Oh, theyre just medium lasers, they dont make much heat' then suffer heat effects from firing all of them at once.
The weapons load also made me wonder if I was looking at an Atlas, or a beefy Warhammer. The major difference is this mech has the heat sinks to use both PPCs at once.
Not a terrible design, but one that is going to suffer more heat problems than it probably should.
