I think that this refit went too far. Replacing AC/2s with LB guns to get rid off the XL engine is good idea, as is using remaining tonnage to improve armor, but then loosing half of your long range weapons in favor of SRMs and JJs looks strange to me. The other systems (C3, lasers) are nice to have, but they cannot out weight the loss of long range firepower, even if short range weapons are quite scaring, they don't fit with Mauler idea well, but that may be just my opinion. |

It improves on the original in many ways: more armor, jump jets, standard engine, deep ammo bins, and LBX cannons. The C3 link is an especially good touch.
But . . . it loses _half_ of it's long-range firepower. Sure, it has better short-ranged firepower, but the design has really lost its focus. Now it runs cool, but only because half of its weapons sit idle at any given range. It's more flexible, but its firepower is underwhelming at long or short range.
Still, it might be nice to put in a lance of more traditional Maulers (C3 equipped, of course) to act as close support. It might even be a nasty surprise to someone familiar with the original Mauler when they run under the minimum range of the LRM's. |
