Overview:
Waaaaay back in 1987, I was in a BattleTech/MechWarrior campaign. My pilot rolled randomly
for his 'Mech assignment and got a 40 ton Liberator. Problem was, there was no Liberator -
nothing in the rules, nothing in the TRO:3025. I noticed a 'Mech in the graphic novel The
Spider and the Wolf that wasn't identified. It looked just like my Revell Robotech Defenders
Condar model. I decided to make this 'Mech design my Liberator and worked out the stats. I
think its a lot better than the sad design that eventually showed up in the
ETRO:Boondoggles.
Capabilities:
Introduced in 2586 by Norse BattleMech Works and sharing many parts and a similar chassis
with the ubiquitous Wolverine, the Liberator was meant to be a frontline Battlemech with a
good mix of firepower, maneuverability and armor - all for an affordable price. However,
the design was plagued by problems. The right arm pauldron hindered tracking with the Large
Laser, so it was removed, the weight saved being used to increase the rear center torso
armor. During its trials, one of the prototypes had a fusion reactor malfunction that
injured the test pilot. The 'Mech developed a bad reputation and advanced tech originally
proposed for the Liberator was not installed. Even so, Norse BattleMech Works authorized a
modest production output of the design to recoup development costs and most of the 'Mechs
purchased ended up being assigned to militia garrison units in the Federated Suns and later
the Draconis Combine. The Liberator did run hot if care was not taken to balance weapons
fire with movement, however, experienced militia pilots soon discovered that the reputation
of the 'Mech was false. It was a versatile BattleMech that could perform recon, anti-recon,
strike and defense missions well, proving that it was an effective workhorse 'Mech. This
kept the Liberator in limited production into the Succession Wars. QUIRKS: Bad Reputation,
Battlefists, Extended Torso Twist, Jettison-Capable Weapon (Large Laser).
Deployment:
The Liberator can be found mostly in the Federated Suns and the Draconis Combine, usually,
as indicated, in garrison militia units. Because of this, most survived into the Third
Succession War more or less intact. As 'Mech resources become more and more scarce, many of
these BattleMechs are being transferred to front line regiments where they are starting to
show their true worth.
Variants:
Though the Liberator has been altered in many ways throughout its history, only one official
variant was ever produced. The 4D model replaces the SRM 6s and their ammo with two LRm 5s,
two tons of LRM ammo and an extra heat sink, making it a decent long range support
BattleMech.
Notable MechWarriors:
MechWarrior Paolo Hawkins inherited his Liberator from his grandfather and serves in the
Clovis Draconis March Militia, continuing a family tradition that goes back over two
centuries. He and his 'Mech, "Medusa" participated in the recent Galtor campaign, where he
racked up three kills, a Griffin, a Whitworth and a Panther, gaining the attention of his
CO. He has been put up for a field commission to Leftenant.
