Overview:
The discovery of the Star League Memory Core on Helm by the Grey Death Legion caused a
sensation. Corporations throughout the Inner Sphere bid for the rights to develop and
market the rediscovered technology. While investments in certain weaponry, such as extended
range lasers and ultra autocannons, paid handsome dividends, others did not. Irian
BattleMechs Unlimited spent millions of c-bills to reverse engineer NARC technology and
produce the Octagon Missile Magnet. Although they presented it great fanfare in the 3040's,
sales were poor. Faced with stiff competition from IMB Systems' Artemis IV FCS and a
possible shareholder's revolt, the IMBU board commissioned a thorough study of NARC tech and
its applications. Their commission's report led to their development of the Marksman.
Capabilities:
The study showed that the fault was not in the Octagon Missile Magnet Beacon, but rather in
its poor deployment. Planners had placed systems on revamped designs like the Trebuchet and
the Stalker. The commision pointed out that pilots of these mechs were unlikely to close to
with in the NARC's effective ranges. Instead of mounting the system in existing missile
boats, the commission recommended that it be mounted on a fast raider.
IMBU engineers took this message to heart with the Marksman. They mounted the massive
Pitban 230 engine, the same used in the 80 ton Awesome! Marksman can keep pace, if not
outrun almost any other design in the Inner Sphere. To increase survivability, they
shielded the mech in 5 tons of Kallon Light Ferro-Fibrous. The Marksman's speed and armor
guarantees that it will be able to dash in, target opposing mechs and escape to engage
another day.
While the NARC was incorporated as an afterthought in the TBT-7M and STK-5M, the Marksman's
designers built the mech around the system. The sophistication of its incorporation rivals
that of the Star League era KTO-19 Kintaro design. For self defense, a single Irian
Weapons Works Super 6 was placed on the right arm.
Deployment:
If IMBU had their way, the Marksman would become a standard light mech of the FWLM, as
ubiquitous as the Hermes II. League Central Coordination and Command, however, is unwilling
to place massive orders of an untested mech. They've ordered a test run of Marksman and
assigned those already produced to the 1st Atrean Dragoons. IMBU is confident that it can
prove its worth paired with the elite unit's Crusaders and Archers.
Variants:
At this stage there aren't any variants produced, beyond a few discarded prototypes. It
seems unlikely that any will be seen before IMBU begins a full production run of Marksmen
Notable MechWarriors:
Angela Dahlman
Lt. Dahlman's a young recruit from the 1st Atrean Dragoons' homeworld of McKenna. Angela
has shown an incredible aptitude when piloting her brand new Marksman. During a recent live
training exercise, she was able to hit twelve mechs with NARC Beacons. Irian BattleMechs is
considering using her as a spokeswoman in their campaign to win over the LCCC.

Comment:
As a Narc platform it should work well. There isn't much more the 'Mech can do, but it can easily work league's Hermes and Spider designs in reconnaissance duty. The armour is sufficient since the speed should serve as the main protection. I wouldn't mind having another ton of Narc ammo, but that's not a significant problem. This thing could easily appear in a TRO. I prefer to leave Narc launchers to speedy vehicles, but this would do. I like this.

Comment:
This is probably the best NARC platform I've seen, and I think the fluff makes sense too. The FWLM has historically been dependent on the LRM for long-range firepower, so this makes a lot of sense as a Marik design. I also appreciate that Archilochus resisted the temptation to try and make this an all-purpose raider with an XL engine and some more weapons. This 'mech has one job, does it well, and retires behind the lines when that job is complete.
My only quibble is with the placement of the medium laser. I'd put it in the head where it can't be shot off. That's why I'm giving a 4.5 instead of a 5.
