Nice weapon setup but few flaws keep from giving it a higher rating.
1. The mech can use an ERPPC, sure it runs hotter but sometimes extra reach is better than nothing. This also adds more firepower to your opening duels if you end up facing a lighter opponent who keeps backing away.
2. The armor is a shade light for me. 16.5 tons ? This is the armor that can be fitted on lighter assaults. To be frank a 85 tonner can carry the same loadout, same armor but 1 DHS less.
3. You are carrying a large XL engine and a heavy close range setup here. You better pack more armor and not to mention a missile weapon which means ammo.
As much as I like the design, I can't rate it any higher than 3. But the mech is a sight to behold in close range, pretty much easily shredding anything below 60 tons with ease. |

Strangely the weapon mix reminds me of the Albatross, but the Rolling Thunder is more focused on medium to short range combat. The PPC can support the gauss well, but I wouldn't rely on these two for long range slugging matches against more specialized machines. The pulse laser can add some more firepower and the pilot should try to get in range with it as soon as it's convenient. The lasers and SRMs alone can savage almost anything under 60 tons with ease, but as a backup for the big guns they can crack even tougher nuts. Overall the guns offer a nice blend of heavy hitters and crit seekers, but I think that the 'Mech has enough heat sinks to handle an ER PPC. The armour isn't full, but I think it's sufficient, although in combination with the overpriced engine and short range weapons it gives me shivers. I also wouldn't mind dropping one of the lasers for more gauss ammo. This 'Mech is a bit too expensive for my tastes, but it's well designed and given the 100t / 400 XL limitations it could end up much worse. |
