Overview:
    The Fourth Succession War and the War of 3039 revolutionized the way that Wars were fought
    in the Inner Sphere.  Where lines had been static, they became fluid.   During the later
    conflict, the Armed Forces of the Federated Commonwealth (AFFC) found that their artillery
    had been overrun by Gunji no Kanrei Theodore Kurita's unorthodox tactics.  It was clear that
    older pieces, such as the Long Tom were no longer servicable.
    
    The decoding of the Helm Memory Core appeared to hold the key: Arrow IV Artillery Systems.
    Light and compact enough to fit on a BattleMech's frame, they promised to solve the earlier
    tactical difficulties.  Corean Enterprises won the bid with their jaw droppingly cheap
    Ballistae design.

Capabilities:
    The inexpense of the Ballistae was not due to rushed work nor shoddy materials, as some
    initially feared.  Instead it was the product of careful planning and reuse of tested
    materials all of which cut down R&D costs.
    
    The Ballistae's frame is that of a modified Centurion.  When production of the CN9's
    internal Structure was moved to the orbital facilities necessary to manufacture the advanced
    endo steel structure, Corean merely made some superficial changes necessary to strengthen
    the right arm assemblies to bear the three ton heavier Arrow IV Artillery system.  Three
    tons of ammunition, which are enveloped in CASE, supply the pilot with ample reloads.
    
    The Phototech 806c lasers and McCloud Special Jump Jets have both been used for centuries on
    Davion produced designs and any well stocked depot will be able to provide supply parts for
    them.
    
    The Ballistae also benefits from the surplus of 200 Rated Engines that flooded the market
    after Corean and Achenar upgraded their Enforcer and Centurion designs.  While not the
    speediest design, the Ballistae nevertheless much more nimble than other artillery vehicles.
    Nine tons of armor and its lasers provide it with ample protection should it account enemy
    raiders behind enemy lines.

Deployment:
    The Ballistae began limited production in 3048 and its currently being undergoing extended
    field trials with the Third FedCom Regimental Combat Team on Sarna.  Given the emphasis on
    producing new, upgraded frontline BattleMechs to fight the Clans, it seems unlikely that the
    Federated Commonwealth High Command will be placing heavy emphasis on the design in the near
    future.

Variants:
    No major variants have been suggested, although a few commanders have substituted a laser
    for additional Arrow IV rounds.

    Lee is a pilot who fancies to be a minor poet.  A devotee of the Addicks school of
    discordant verses, he is known to flood the comchannels with recitations of his latest
    ouvre.  His fellow soldiers joke that it is his meter, not his munitions, which make his
    enemies quake in terror.
