The trio of UAC-2s are a sticking point for a lot of people, and for good reason. They absolutely underperform, it's basically a proto RAC-2 for DOUBLE the weight.
But the C Variant ALSO mounts a pair of ERLLs and ERMLs that are VERY well-sinked. And they, like the 3 UAC-2s, are all tied to a Targeting Computer. That TC makes the Ultras much more useful, as they'll actually have a chance to hit targets at the near-extreme ranges they can reach. A bit closer in, the ERLLs can join them while still remaining heat neutral.
It's far from the worst Night Gyr variant, but you'll likely pick it because a better variant is more expensive BV-wise. |

This design isn't as bad as it may look at first glance. It's an excellent sniper, although it's firepower is a bit light. The accuracy and range help make up for this. However, most enemies will attempt to close with this variant as quickly as possible.
That's where the TC really comes in handy. Ultra AC-2's are great, but often unexpected, crit seekers when aiming at a specific location. 3 Ultra AC'2s with a TC can work the same as an SRM-6. That is, a SRM-6 that puts every missile in the location you want.
Still, the design requires an excellent gunner and a fair amount of skill to use correctly, so it doesn't rate much better than average. |

Three Ultra 2s....something about that seems a bit more than what it is on paper. At standard, thats not all that much. SHould all three Ultra shots hit, though, an even dozen points of damage is nothing to ignore. Not quite the perfect critical hunter, but not the worst, either.
The beam weapons are also useful, when the ammo runs dry. Hey, blowing three UACs at double rate every turn will chew through ammo faster than you would think.
Slaving the weapons to a TC makes this a very very effective sniper, or anti-air platform.
Park a couple of these on a rise,or other vantage point, and pick apart targets at range. Or just wait for someone to break the Rules of Engagement and start spraying the whole field. |

This is two Night Gyrs burdened with AC/2s. There are so many better ways to use the seventeen tons devoted to them. |

For some reason, I've always liked this config, although I seldom use it. It is inferior when compared to other Night Gyrs, but it does do its job. The UACs and large lasers both have longer range than LRMs, although they'll inflict less damage the way things are. The targeting computer helps some with that.
Really, this is meant for the same role as a 3025 JagerMech, but does it better. As a fire support configuration, I'd usually take this over the Night Gyr D. It has longer range and good energy weapons. |
