Overview:
In the early 3050’s, in an effort to unite the realm and to recover national pride, Archon
Trillian Steiner did what so many rulers in so many other nations had done for centuries:
induce her military manufacturers to come up with designs to stir up citizens’
nationalistic pride. In a hr case of Coventry Metal Works, they went through the history of
their production lines and decided to reintroduce a design that had died out centuries ago,
thr Alfar medium-weight BattleMech.
Capabilities:
Originally intended to be a competitor to foreign designs such as the Griffin, Shadow Hawk
and Wolverine, the Alfar is also a 55 ton BattleMech with a pretty standard movement
profile. Able to run at 86 kph and make leaps up to 150 meters at a time, the new AL-B3
Alfar is actually able to jump further than the original AL-A1, which enhances its
battlefield use. Additionally, modern technology has advanced amount that the design can
actually reach speeds of over 100 kph for brief periods thanks to the inclusion of a
supercharger to the machine.
Offensively, this new Alfar takes the original and builds onto it. Like that earlier design,
the main weapon is a particle cannon, but in this case, it is an extended-range PPC built to
clan standards. Backing this deadly weapon at closer ranges are a trio of highly accurate
medium X-pulse lasers and a six-pack launcher of short-range missiles that has also been
constructed to clan tech standards. The missile rack is fed by two tons of ammunition,
allowing alternate ammo loads that can vary depending on the mission, and stored in a
munitions bay protected by an advanced CASE system. It should be noted however, that even
Defensively, the new Alfar mounts 15 tons of ballistic-reinforced armor, providing almost
maximum coverage for its frame. This amount of protection is required as to allow for all
the tonnage devoted to weapons and armor required that an extra light fusion core be
installed. To help prevent this from being as much of a hindrance as it might otherwise have
been, this fusion core has been built to clan-spec standards. This means that losing a side
torso, while devastating doesn’t make a complete mission kill.
Deployment:
The new Alfar is being slowly deployed among line units, with most going to the more
prestigious units or pilots first. The plan is to deploy at least a few to most units over
the next 5 years.
Variants:
Designed as a cheaper alternative to the AL-B3, the AL-B4 Alfar lacks the extra light engine
and clan-tech specification weapons of the other model, as well as the heavy
ballistic-reinforced armor plating. Instead, all of its energy weapons are extended-range
Inner Sphere models, as is its short-range missile rack, which also has only a single ton of
reloads. The light ferro-fibrous armor still provides near maximum protection, and the
design retains most of its mobility and all of the jump capacity of the B3 model.
