Overview:
Design Quirks: None
Designed by Clan Diamond Shark in the early 3080s, the Atalanta Medium Tank was created as a
premium main battle tank for sale to allies of the clan or use in important second line
formations. The Atalanta is often sold to richer periphery worlds to serve as their premier
combat units in lieu of more expensive Battlemechs. It contains the most advanced
technologies in production at the time of its creation, a ploy by the Diamond Sharks to hook
prospective buyers on the Clan's spare parts and repair services.
The design would go on to inspire Clan Hell's Horses in their Eurus project, although that
vehicle's even more advanced technology would delay its production for decades while the
Atalanta was already the veteran of many-a-conflict.
Capabilities:
An example of a field refit of the Atalanta for ease of maintenance, most everything in the
downgrade is worse than the base model. A standard clan gauss rifle replaces the hyper
assault gauss rifle, kinetic anti missile system instead of the laser, 165 standard fusion
instead of the 220xl, bulky ferro-fibrous instead of sloped hardened armor, and standard ecm
instead of angel ecm. The only upgrade is swapping the pintle micro pulse laser for a pair
of ap gauss rifles, one in the pintle mount and one in the turret.
Slower, with less resilient to soft kills, and with worse active defenses, there is little
argument that the vehicle is less effective than the base model. But this and similar
modifications persist due to the drastically reduced price and ease of maintenance. Quikcell
is even looking into manufacturing these downgrades from scratch, although the Sea Foxes
take a dim view of that proposal.
Notable MechWarriors:
The Republic of the Barrens purchased several Atalantas for their military, but conflicts
with the Ferris Collective wore down the stockpile and repairs often resulted in similar
downgrades. The inexpensive cost to replace parts, especially the engine, means that it has
become their standard practice to modify even factory fresh models to the lower standard.
The sales from the secondhand components have also recouped many of the costs involved in
their purchase.
