Not exactly the best assault out there, but who can deny that it works as it was meant to. Many people say that it is not that scary, but show me anyone running toward this to say it to his face. It's super tough thanks to it's armor, but occasional lucky hit can demolish it with ammo explosion. There is not enough ammo, but if this 'Mech works as a damage sink then this may be positive. The LRMs will last just long enough to cover the behemoth until it reaches the short range. Unless the enemy has enough space to maneuver then the Atlas will eventually deliver the death anywhere. Short range firepower was already commented in previous reviews, so I'll only second to the odes on brutality of it's damage. This 'Mech maybe isn't the best for duels, but it can certainly be useful in any engagements.

This is by far the most overrated battlemech out there. According to the rule book that comes with the Battletech box, "...the Atlas insn't nearly as scary as it looks. This mech is painfully slow and carries an arsenal of exclusively short range firepower, with the exception of a single LRM 20 rack." You people thinking that you are going to charge at your opponent and gun them down with the ac/20 and such fail to the realize that NO ONE, I repeat, no one, is going to let you get within 6 hexes of them. And with the Atlas' slow speed you're not going to be able to chase anyone down. A Maurader II will embarress an Atlas nearly every time, and if only fairs worse against clan opponents. Further if you try to play defense with this your opponent will just pick it apart from a distance, so it fails in this regard as well. Overall a mech not worthy of its reputation.

Oh, the big one. I remember reading somewhere, perhaps even in the CCG, that the very sight of an Atlas is enough to bring the taste of bile to even the most hardened Mechwarriors, sap the very strength of their battle away from them. Which is what the Atlas is there for.
This is an assault machine in the purest sense of the word. Speed has been sacrificed for a massive load of short range weaponry than can quite literally destroy many machines in a single salvo. At range, the Atlas has respectable if not impressive firepower from its LRM/20. Altogether, the Atlas is quite a pounder, but must take care against faster opponents who are armed for ranged combat.
Another nice point is that the Atlas rarely faces heat troubles due to the ample 20 heatsinks it carries. Though not enough to vent the heat from a total Alpha Strike, Atlases are rarely called on to do such a thing. For the best results at that, you'd need to be six hexes away from someone in front of you, and three hexes away from someone behind you. Not very common.
Overall, the design is handicapped only by short range. Which is covered quite well in future refits. For now, just use a beserker charge and watch them scatter.

Still one of the most fearsom sights that ever made actuators freeze, this beast rarely needs anyone to flatter it.
I feel, however, that the LRM 20, while an effective long range tool, is better served by simply loading up with LRM 5's and splitting the ammo packs. This conserves space and allows the ammo usage to reflect the amount of force necessary to dispatch lesser foes while not diminishing the longevity of range.

This is a strong behemoth...I remember a game not to long ago, when a pilot of one of these bad boys needed to cool his mech off...jumped into some water....problem is, he had already taken a blow to the head earlier in the game. You guessed it...lucky roll...head shot from a PPC...instant salvage!
