An almost perfect heavy mech! Only flaw is the heavy dependance on ammo but the bins are big enough for most engagements. Good firepower at all ranges while producing only little heat and perfect armor-coverage, what more do you want?

All tiem favorite Heavy Mech from the 3025 era. It fits my fighting style perfectly. I like to play versatile mechs and break them off into specific lances. In one game this might be my Lynchpin, in others it might be my hunter/killer. It can do everything and while it may not excel at any. Often the damn thing beats specialised mechs due to sheer durability.

This 'Mech is a turtle with big teeth. Heavy armor and powerful short-range weapons can scare many foes. Ranged firepower is roughly equal to Thunderbolt and short range... well these two are quite similar, but the Orion needs more ammo.
The Orion simply walks toward the enemy while throwing death and who dies first loses the fight. And the Orion can last for a very long time.
An ideal 'Mech for dirty work in any unit and the only improvement it really needs is the CASE, which is not available in 3025. If you want to invest money to buy a 'Mech then this is one of the best buys you can get.

"Could the virus kill an Orion?"
"Nothing can kill an Orion, this meeting is over."
I have oh so much respect for this bad boy after doing some trials with it. As part of an OP-FOR contract, my unit had to go up against the NAIS Cadets...who had one of these in the lance. It just would NOT die. Even after the pilot had fallen over unconcious and I took a great many aimed shots at it, pulverizing the torsos...it still lived.
And eventually, it mounted an offensive against me again even though it was so battered. This 'Mech mounts a plethora of ballistic weaopnry for all ranges, and runs fairly cool compared to laser machines of comparable weight, i.e. Grasshopper and Guillotine. It mounts maximum protection as well, which can make touching off the ammo very difficult, let me tell you.
This Orion does most of it's damage up close, no doubt...but don't be afraid to let the enemy come to you. Set up a missile launch point, and just sit there until he either closes, or you're out of LRMs. And the close in to start the real battle.
The only downside is heavy ammo dependency on this machine. But so long as the battle is not incredibly long, you'll do fine.

ON1-K - I am not overly impressed by the standard Orion. With its potpourri of weapons, it never really impresses. A base 10 heat sinks should just start ringing mental alarm bells instantly when seen on a design this heavy that does not specialise on fire-support. And really, the effective volume of fire from an Orion is not all that great, especially if you increase the range beyond 9.....
What it does have going for it, is the proportionally HEAVIEST ARMOUR of ALL 3025 'mechs!! There is a simple reason for that: In the original 3025 book, they stuck to the rule (which was later discarded) that you have to be able to allocate all armour points. Ie - you had to be able to use all the mounted armour points. If a design could only mount 7 more points of armour, it was NOT allowed to mount another half ton of it. The Orion oringinally mounted 14 tons of it, the max without conflicting with that rule. However, either due to bad editing, or to the fact that maybe it was not clear yet at that stage that half-tons of ammo were restricted to MGs, the Orion actually mounted 1.5 tons of SRM ammo - 37 shots! This became illegal later (or maybe had always been) so that extra half ton was put into armour at a time when that became legal. Hence the Orion is the only 3025 'mech that mounts its true maximum armour!
But apart from that, I am not impressed with this design. Falling back onto the Marauder after all, that is a design that would always add something to my force (a really cool and powerful sniper). With the Orion, well, there are just too many alternatives.
